Are You Experiencing Quarantine Brain?

Another term is being added to the lexicon in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic: quarantine brain. It takes many forms, from confusion and fogginess to limited executive functioning. Those who fall prey to it may find themselves unable to complete tasks, manage their time and routine, and make sound decisions. This occurs even if the person has no prior history with attention deficit disorder/

.

Some report a lack of motivation to get out of bed, let alone engage in their daily activities. What helps them is knowing that their boss, teachers, and family are counting on them to launch themselves into their day.

The brain is a reactive organ that responds to stimulus instantaneously. You get up in the middle of the night and stub your toe. Your toe sends a signal that the brain translates as pain. You immediately jump up and down, perhaps even cursing at your poor body part. Taking a moment to breathe and calm yourself and, as author and meditation teacher Stephen Levine said, “Send it mercy.” He eloquently expressed the impact of mercy over pain: “If there is a single definition of healing it is to enter with mercy and awareness those pains, mental and physical, from which we have withdrawn in judgment and dismay.”

That advice could easily be applied in the situation that people worldwide are in, in an effort to slow the spread of the virus. For a growing number of folks who don’t venture out of their homes unless they are required to go to their jobs or to go to the supermarket or pharmacy, there is a sense of captivity. Not specifically by government edicts but the disease itself.

Like most people, I choose to stay home. I am a therapist who offers telehealth sessions,

Natural Ways to Minimize or Shrink Pores

Table of Contents[Hide][Show]

When you think about how to shrink pores naturally, images of face masks and scrubs may come to mind. With so many remedies out there, it’s hard to know what’s actually effective, and what’s hype.

Firstly, we need to look at what causes enlarged pores so we can get to the root cause and have symptom relief.

What Are Pores?

Sweat, pimples, blackheads…our pores make a lot of things. When people talk about reducing the size of pores though they mean sebaceous glands, not sweat glands.

Our sebaceous glands (aka skin pores) make sebum. This oily sebum helps moisturize skin, keeping it soft and supple. Different factors can make our pores seem larger and more obvious.

What Causes Enlarged Pores?

There’s a whole lot of speculation, but here’s what we do know. Factors like age, ethnicity, and health play a role in pore size.

Race

A 2018 article “Facial Skin Pores: A Multiethnic Study,” looked at the differences between women of different races to compare pore size. Chinese and Japanese women have significantly lower pore density. These women had 5-8 times less pore density than any other ethnic group.

By far Indian and Brazilian women had the most noticeable pores. Caucasian women came in slightly behind the Indian women. However, Asian women by far won the least noticeable pores award.

Age

It’s often said pore size increases with age, but that’s not exactly true. While pore density does vary some with age, the differences are usually insignificant. Our ethnicity and genetics play a much bigger role in pore size than our age.

However, skin damage does make pores more visible, and skin damage increases with age.

A 2017 study in Skin Research and Technology notes that while women don’t get larger pores or more pores

10 Toxic Ingredients to Avoid in Personal Care Products

Table of Contents[Hide][Show]

It’s hard to narrow this list down to just 10 toxic personal care ingredients since unfortunately there are SO many. Even products that claim to be “paraben-free,” “clean,” or “all-natural” often hide toxins in their ingredients list. Ironically, sometimes these hidden ingredients are toxic chemicals that are some of the worst offenders!

Over a number of years we’ve gradually made the switch to much healthier, more natural cleaning and personal care brands, one product at a time.

And when I couldn’t find them, I made them!

Doesn’t the FDA Have It Covered?

It’s a common misconception that skincare ingredients must be proven safe and effective before they’re allowed on the market. Even worse, the FDA doesn’t have the authority to ban skincare ingredients that show strong evidence of being dangerous or deadly. Talcum powder is the perfect example.

Products that contain talc (aka talcum powder) include makeup and some baby powders. Talcum powder is frequently contaminated with cancer-causing asbestos. Johnson and Johnson paid millions over this issue, and the lawsuits just keep rolling in (so far there are 15,500 lawsuits).

It’s obvious the item should be pulled from shelves, right? Nope. Baby powder is still being sold in stores, still being sprinkled on baby’s genitals, and still causing harm for some. The FDA and government oversight agencies usually don’t pull the plug on toxins in skincare, so we all have to stay on top of what’s in our products.

Greenwashing

Many companies have caught on to the fact that consumers want safe, natural products for their families. While this is driving positive change, not everything is as it seems. Since the beauty industry is largely self-regulated, skincare companies can dress up labels with natural-looking colors and terms like “vegan” and “all-natural” — all while still
